What Business Grants are Available to Help Build a Greener Future?
Published on 18 May 2023
Businesses up and down the UK understand the importance of sustainability in their day-to-day operations and are striving to do more to help the environment. Whether that’s cycle-to-work schemes, recycling, or something on a greater scale such as installing solar panels on their premises. Not only does this present an opportunity to be greener, but it can also save landlords and companies money in the long run. However, some initial thoughts may be that solar panels can be disruptive to install and cost a lot of money. Thankfully, there are a number of grants available, particularly in the West of England, designed specifically for businesses that want to reduce their carbon footprint.
Firstly, there are Green Business Grants provided by the West of England Combined Authority. If you’re an SME you may be able to receive between £1,000 and £15,000 to help towards the cost of being more environmentally friendly. Whether that’s purchasing and installing LED lighting, solar photovoltaic panels, more efficient heating, air compressors and roof, wall, pipe or technical component insulations. This is based on eligibility facts such as:
- Being a business that employs less than 249 people
- Are a limited company, limited liability partnership or co-operative
- Have a trading address in South Gloucestershire, North East Somerset, Bristol or Bath local authority areas
- Can match fund your project – in previous rounds this amount has been between 50-60% match funding
- Have a turnover of more than £85,000 and are VAT registered or VAT exempt
As it is a grant, the great news is that it does not need to be repaid, but if successful you must have completed the project before claiming the amount you have been awarded. This can be done within a six-month window. With applications set to open in June 2023, this is a first come first served grant with a total of £2million available to SMEs in the area.
On top of the upcoming Green Business Grants, there are also Government business energy schemes, loans and grants to consider. These include subsidised saving measures to help small businesses to reduce their environmental impact. Whether that’s sustainable development initiatives, help with the cost of purchasing energy-efficient equipment, waste management and reduction initiatives or other energy-efficient measures like revising the production process. The OFGEM website is a great resource to find out what you may be entitled to.
If you’re searching for better ways to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions, you may also be entitled to a free carbon survey. Available for SMEs you’ll be able to find out more about your current energy use, learn how to reduce bills and emissions, discover how new technologies can help, as well as make your team more comfortable overall. This survey consists of 12 hours of free support per business delivered by technical advisors who will look at your lighting systems, business equipment, fabric and heating and discuss how to make better improvements. Again there are a number of eligibility criteria to meet which can be found on the West of England Combined Authority website.
