WHY BATTERY STORAGE MAKES SENSE FOR YOUR HOME’S SOLAR pV SYSTEM
Published on 03 December 2020
Demand for solar battery storage systems is increasingly busy at JTD Solar right now. Joe in Swindon was our latest energy-smart customer to take advantage of the benefits of battery storage. We installed a solar pV system in his family home earlier this year after the governments Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) scheme had ended. Joe got in touch recently to ask about adding a battery storage system for a number of reasons.
He and his family are now at home less during the day and as a result a lot of their unused renewable energy is going straightinto the grid. However with the colder weather and longer evenings they are needing more power than they can generate at night so are having to buy energy back from the grid – at a higher price than they sold it. Not the ideal! The new battery will store their unused home-produced energy during the day to be there when they need it, reducing their reliance on the grid and their energy bills.
Joe is also taking advantage of the scheme that replaced FiT by signing up to a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff which sees electricity companies having to offer tariffs to pay customers who put renewable electricity they have generated into the grid.
‘We already have a smart meter which was a prerequisite of signing up and our pV system was installed by JTD who are an MCS certified installer which was the other criteria’. Joe told us ‘Tariffs varied greatly so we had to shop around. Our existing energy supplier was only offering 1.5p/kWh. We opted for an alternative company who were offering 5.5p/kWh and who didn’t stipulate that we use them for our energy supply. ‘
‘They will also pay us for energy stored in our battery which was an important factor in our decision to invest in the storage system. ‘
JTD Solar was able to advise Joe on the best type of battery system to suit his family’s requirements considering features such as the right storage capacity, charge and discharge rate to suit their needs, AC or DC coupling, smart functionality and a price that was within their budget.
This family’s decision wasn’t entirely based on financial considerations though. They were delighted that the installation of a battery storage system enabled them to become less dependent on grid electricity suppliers which was in keeping with their family values around reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to environmental sustainability.
